Understand the heart

Connect the four chambers to pulmonary and systemic circulation.

Anatomy illustration
Cutaway heart illustration with chambers, valves and great vessels. The patient's right is on the viewer's left.

Optional 3D download: 0.4 MB. Study notes and questions work with the illustration too.

Right and left always refer to the person, not the viewer.

Choose a structure

Read its role below. Open 3D to isolate it in the model.

Start with the whole organ

Connect the four chambers to pulmonary and systemic circulation.

Trace the circulation

  1. 1. Body
  2. 2. Right atrium
  3. 3. Right ventricle
  4. 4. Lungs
  5. 5. Left atrium
  6. 6. Left ventricle
  7. 7. Body

Exam connection

Name an artery by the direction of flow: away from the heart. Pulmonary arteries carry oxygen-poor blood, so colour alone is not a reliable definition.
